Track of the Week
Track of The Week: April 22, 2013 // Daft Punk – Get Lucky
April 22nd, 2013
Parisian duo and electro pioneers Daft Punk have defined French dance music for over a decade with their unique hybrid of acid-house, techno, indie-electro and hip-hop striking an influential chord via their seminal albums Homework, Discovery and Human After All. Following the well-executed film score they produced as the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album a couple of years ago, they are now poised to release their next long-player, the very eagerly awaited Random Access Memories, on May 21st 2013.
‘Get Lucky’ is the first single previewed from the record, which was made in collaboration with Chic frontman Nile Rodgers, and reveals the duo’s conscious intention to utilize the past for inspiration rather than presenting something futuristic. Built around a catchy funked up guitar riff and featuring an impeccable falsetto from Pharrell, the track’s a stripped down and effervescent groove that sounds like a direct throwback to the halcyon days of disco. What’s remarkable is the apparent restraint from the duo themselves – the pulsating vocodered break enters halfway through, but it’s Rodgers’ infectious riff and Pharrell’s supremely confident vocal that dominates the track. A genuine collaboration between disparate creative forces and the first great song of the summer.
